in Penalty Kill

Preseason Tracking Demo

I’m still working out the kinks on everything I’m tracking and the time required for each event. Ultimately, from what can be scraped from NHL data, pulled from stat sites such as Corsica, and anything else I can acquire from other trackers I think this project can be full actualized.

One obvious stat that stands out is ZEFR (Zone Entry to Formation or dangerous Rush) rate, a stat devised by Arik Parnass now of the Colorado Avalanche. ZEFR rate measures the percentage of 5-on-4 zone entry attempts that result in a scoring chance off the rush or the team getting set up in formation.

You can read all about it here in a primer Parnass provided and presented on at VanHAC 2016.

More recently Charlie O’Connor now of The Athletic Philadelphia used it in his full-season tracking of the Philadelphia Flyers penalty kill which you can check out here (part four which includes links to other parts in the series).

Finally, one other area I’m curious about is the breaking up of zone entries against. Dimitri Filipovic’s work on breaking up entries at 5v5 has me curious about whether or not there’s value in this skill at 4v5 and if it’s repeatable given the circumstances in that game state.

It could be nothing, but it’s all too likely curiosity will get the best of me and I’ll be tracking it in the regular season.

Here’s a rough demo of the preseason game versus the Vancouver Canucks and the a trial format of how everything could be presented:
